Wilcox County Surnames Wilcox County Homepage 1997 Jan 1998 Feb 1998 Mar 1998 Apr 1998 May 1998 Jun 1998 next--> 11/4/97 BAIN - MASON Daniel S. BAIN (b. 1802 NC) and his wife Sarah Ann H. MASON (b. 1804 SC) may have moved to AL as small children. We know they were married in Wilcox Co. in 1836 (a tad late for those days -- could there have been first marriages for each?) and reared 5 children in Wilcox county between Snow Hill and Pineapple (near "Captain Spier's plantation" according to a grandson), and died there in 1870 and 1861, respectively. They may have spent 50 years in Wilcox county. Their children were: Thomas Judson (m. Miranda Bowman) who died in the Civil War; William Dawson (m. Caroline Revers) who supposedly lived in Bessemer as an adult; Martha H. (m. Joseph S. Smith) who moved away with her husband and was "never heard from again;" Alexander Travis (m. Matilda Jane Kyser, dau of George and Jane C. Ernest Kyser of the county) who moved to TX; and Mary Jane (m. to a Steen who died in a duel, then to Richard Hall, then to Billy Vernon of the county)who also moved to TX. Alexander Travis is the only family member we know much about, and that is simply because he is my husband's great grandfather! We've learned nothing about Daniel S. BAIN's NC heritage, nothing about his wife Sarah, and very little about the lives of our Alexander's siblings. Camden has several legal documents on file, but nothing that leads to new data. Please, please someone toss me a clue! Thanks! Respond to: Karlen Bruner Bain, travkar@mail.airmail.net

1/12/98 WILLIAMS - WILSON - KELLY I am trying to identify the parents of Keziah (Kissey) Williams. She was born 1794 in Georgia and died 1859 in Wilcox Co., Alabama. She married John W. Kelly, January 2, 1817 in Clarke Co., Alabama. The marriage was performed by Elias Lumsden. She and John Kelly moved to the Lower Peach Tree area of Wilcox Co., Alabama before 1820 where they raised 4 sons and 2 daughters. In a Bounty Land Grant application dated July 30, 1855, Kissey testified that her name before marriage to John Kelly was Kissey Williams. In a separate affadavit in support of that grant application Jesse Wilkerson and Rachel Harris state they were acquainted with Kissy Wilson before her marriage to John W. Kelly and were present at the marriage , death, and burial of John W. Kelly. I believe the discrepancy in surnames (Williams/Wilson) comes from the fact that neither Kissey Kelly, Jesse Wilkerson, nor Rachel Harris could read or write and that third parties wrote the affadavits. Any information that would help to identify Keziah ( Kissey) Williams parents and siblings would be greatly appreciated. Respond to: Raymond A. Kelley, Jr., RKelly6704@aol.com

6/22/98 TEDETON - TED(D)LETON - TETTERTON - TETTLETON Jesse Tedeton stated he was born in 1828 in Wilcox County Alabama. I can't find evidence that this is true, but I find a John Tettleton or Tetterton married to a Jane Farish in 1826 in Clark County Alabama. Could he have been mistaken about this? Jesse seems to have had brother John who went with him to Louisiana in 1848. They started to spell the name Tedeton or sometimes Tedleton. They both witnessed each others marriage lisence Jesse in Ouchita Parish in 1853 to Evaan Spillers and John to Lydia Ellen Spillers in Union Parish. My name is Robert Lynn Tettleton and my grandfather was John Monroe Tettleton. His father was Frank Tedleton b.1855 in Louisiana but we do not know if John and Lydia were his parents. John and Lydia married in 1854 and could have been his parents. We can not find Frank in the 1860 Union or Louisiana census or in 1870. We can find a John Teddelton 42 years of age living in the parish with the Dickerson family, but no Frank. Don't suppose he came back to Clark Co. in the 60's. Some of my Seale family went back to Butler Co. Alabama during that time. If any one knows of any of these people please get in touch. Reply to: Robert Lynn Tettleton, bobnsue@meta3.net
