LUKER - WAY

Hi. I'm looking for any info on Mary Luker who married my Great Grandfather Aaron Way. They appear in 1860 US census for Wilcox Co. Prairie Bluff community. Aaron, 36, carpenter worth $360, b in SC. Mary 26 born Ala. They left Ala for Texas by sea in 1867, settling in Hackberry, Lavaca Co., TX, a community founded by Germans and near larger German community of Schulenburg. Aaron Way probably came from Orangeburg Dist. SC where large number of Germans and Swiss Germans settled beginning in 1735. Luker appears to be German name.

My 96-year old mother, with fantastic memory, has said various times that her father William Mitchell Way, second son of Aaron and Mary Luker Way, was half German.

The Way family was supposed to have owned land in Ala even though Aaron listed as a farmer. The land lost to taxes is where they buried family silver. Later the women folks went back and dug up the silver to finance the ship passage from Mobile to Texas. Any and all info on the Lukers would be much appreciated.
