BARGE
My name is Bettie Jean Barge McDonald, I have recently started tracking my family roots. I have some limited information and do hope you can provide me some assistance in finding out more about my family. My Grand Fathers name was Jeff Barge he is of I believe Scottish decent maybe. My father James Mack Barge was born in Dallas County in 1914, born to the union of Cennie and Jeff. My grandmother Cennie is of African American heritage. I have family in Bessemer Alabama. My aunt Pecolla has for years done genelogy research I've lost contact with her. My mother Carrie Lee was born in Selma to Callie and Ervin Parnell. Both of my parents are now deceased. My mother's birthdate is August 12, 1924. My sister Carol died two years ago. I have one half sister estranged from the family for years. I have faced a number of health challenges over the past few years and fear if I don't pull the information on my family together to pass on to my two children and my two grandchildren it will be lost. Can you help?...I would be most grateful for any suggestions and/or information you may be able to pass on to me.THANK YOU. May God's Blessing be with you. Sincerely,

ADAMS - HAVARD
I am looking for information on the family of Willam Wiatt/Wyatt ADAMS (b.c.1800 NC, d.1859 AL or MS) who married Martha HAVARD (b.c.1806 GA, d. 1842 MS). They are listed in the 1830 Alabama Census in Wilcox County. Several of their children were born there (Lewin c.1822, Susan c. 1824, James 1828, Lewis H. c. 1829/30, Martha 1836, Elizabeth 1838, & prob. Jesse A. 1840--maybe born in MS). I know that the family had moved to MS by 1840. I would like to find any information prior to that date: location of residence, familial connections, descendants still residing in/around Wilcox County, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

McCURDY
I am seeking info on McCURDY's, 1840 census Wilcox County, Alabama. Milas, Thomas and Levi are listed in the microfilm census. Milas only is in the printed index that was complied in error. I belive that Thomas is the father of a younger Miles McCURDY that shows up in Scott County MS in 1850. There is also a John C. McCURDY that is the son of perhaps one of the three. Anything that you can offer will be appreciated as the Clayton Library is short on Wilcox county data. Thank you.

KELLEY - SHEFFIELD
I am looking for information on the families of Nathan Clark KELLEY and Harriet Eugene SHEFFIELD. Nate was born about 1849. Census records in TX show different ages for him.
Harriet (Shiny) b. about 1850 possibly near Vicksburg, MS, but she was in Wilcox Co. when she married Nate about 1870, and they moved to Montgomery Co. TX. My family lore says that Nate's father died before he was born, and he was raised by his grandmother. His mother remarried a man named Richard Rabun. I think her name may have been Martha Sheffield (Kelley) Rabun. Nate never mentioned his mother to his grandchildren, so I'm not sure of this information. A Martha Sheffield Rabun and a Richard Rabun moved to Montgomery Co. TX in the 1860's, according to information that I have been given. There is also a suggestion that there may be a connection to Joseph Sheffield, James G. Sheffield, Nathan J. Sheffield,& Sallie Dewitt all ofWilcox, AL before the 1870's.
Thanks for any help.

STROTHER - STROTHERS
I am researching the surname 'Strother(s)', Dr. David Strothers, Who is known to be the father of Sim Mason (Mulatto), who was killed by his paternal uncle in May 1919, Canton Bend, Wilcox Co., Alabama.
Dr. David Strothers was married during this time, his wife was aware of his mulatto children, (Sim, Callie, Grace, Willie). It is known that Dr. Strothers was not the plantation owner, but perhaps a descendent of the land, (slavery had ended at this time).
It is known that he had brothers (3) ... one that which killed the above mentioned child-Sim ... his nephew ... at the age of 12, May 1919, (due to him/Sim impregnating his white female cousin ... He did not know that she was his cousin) ... Thus, the remainder children and their mother 'Eliza Mason' (born into slavery, African/Indian) moved to Florida, Orlando.
I have recently received data on-line/geno web that .... 'Lucy Strother' exsisted in Canton Bend 1820, according to census. Also, in 1860 'George Hicks Strother' voted during the presidential election in Canton Bend, and a John Calvin Strother, born Canton Bend, Nov.8, 1876 - April 3, 1935 was possibly a descendant.? Searching ..... Dr.David Strother(s), Canton Bend, Wilcox Co., Alabama.

KIRK - SOUTHALL
I would like to locate the gravesite of my gg grandparents James Johnston Kirk, Sr., and Jane Walker Kirk. The family land was near Lower Peachtree, but I believe they probably lived in town rather than on the property. James, born in South Carolina, was raised Presbyterian by Covenanter parents, but later generations became Methodist. Some relatives are buried at Pleasant Hills Cemetery and a couple at the old Liberty Church Cemetery. However, I do not believe that James and Jane are buried in either location. James died in the 1850s; Jane, much earlier. James was remarried to Margaret Drury Southall, a widow. I would also be interested in locating her grave. I would appreciate any clues to this mystery.

AUSTIN - CONE - WEATHERFORD
Several of my lines were from Wilcox Co:
AUSTIN - This family was originally in Butler Co., but great-grandpa Thomas
Jefferson Austin, his mother, Eliza and brother, David (Dock) moved to the
Pine Apple area of Wilcox Co. shortly after the War Between the States. All
the family but David have been accounted for. He disappeared after 1889 when
he was involved in a child custody battle with his ex-wife. (I have the court
transcript and you'd think this was happening in 1999) If anyone has a stray
David Austin around, let me know.
CONE - Originally in Conecuh and Butler Co., Lewis Cone settled in the
Awin/Pine Apple area in the 1830s and raised a large family. Have tons of
info on this bunch but am always looking for new cousins.
WEATHERFORD - Edward Weatherford is first found in Conecuh Co. in 1819, but
settled near the Monroe Co. line in Wilcox Co. This family is well
documented, too, but am still searching for a father for Edward.
Families related to the above include SIMS, BOUTWELL, WARD, LINAM/LYNAM,
CURRY, BAILEY, MOORE, HILL, and several others.

He is found living very close to other SHEFFIELDS, the families of Isaac, Nathan, and Isham SHEFFIELD. In 1860, he is in Clarke Co, AL, living in the Grove Hill area and close to an Adam and John SHEFFIELD. Somehow he is related to these SHEFFIELDs but I haven't been able to find the connection. Could he be another son of Isaac who was born about 1780 married to Rebebcca Hare? Or could he be there brother? William was married to a Nancy (possibly a Nancy Crosby in Bulloch Co, GA). Nancy was born about 1808 in SC. Children that I know of:
Sarah b. ca 1841, Wilcox Co, AL
William (A?) b. ca 1844, Wilcox Co, AL
Margaret Catherine, b. 5 Dec 1846, Wilcox Co, Al, m. Jessie Goodman 1867

Nancy E., b. ca 1850, Wilcox Co, AL

MENDENHALL
My Thomas Mendenhall was born in NC, and he and his brother, Eli Mendenhall, left North Carolina and came to Alabama. Thomas settled in Conecuh County and Eli in Wilcox County. Eli was a good bit older than Thomas, and when Thomas moved his family to Arkansas around 1844, Eli stayed in Alabama. In fact, several of Eli's children were marrying around that time.
One of Thomas' many children was Eliza L. Mendenhall, born 15 September 1827 in Conecuh Co, AL. She evidently married Jesse B Gulley shortly after her family moved to Ouachita Co, AR, around 1847. Eliza and Jesse had 3 children --- Mary Jane Gulley b 25 Nov 1848, Sarah U "Sally" Gulley b 24 May 1850, and Jesse A Gulley b 26 Mar 1855, all born in Ouachita Co, AR.
I found a great book in the Shreveport, LA library entitled "John Gulley, A Planter in Alabama and Arkansas and His Descendants." It included data on Jesse. The Gulleys lived in Monroe Co, AL, Dallas Co, AL, and then Conecuh Co, AL by 1836. So, they probably traveled with the Mendenhalls to Arkansas.
Sometime around the same time his son, Jesse A Gulley, was born, Jesse B Gulley died. He was shown as deceased on the tax roll of 20 June 1855. Eliza married twice more, to Jones Blake and to Thomas McClure. These marriages were to men many years her senior, and Eliza was three times a widow. After the last marriage, she moved in with her daughter, Mary Jane Gulley Potter, and remained with her for 24 years until her death on 31 May 1911. She, as was most her family, was buried at White Church Cemetery near the Mendenhall plantation home in Nevada Co, AR.

GRIMES - POWELL
I'm looking for information on T.J. Grimes. He was born about 1852. He's shown on the 1870 Wilcox County census living with a man by the name of Marshal Powell and his wife, Laura (probably his mother and step-father). There are also three other Grimes children living there, W.M., age 15, Sam D., age 8, and Robert L. , age 5.
T.J. Grimes later married Agnes Knight, had several children, and died at a young age. I'm also curious about Marshal Powell. It looks like he probably was a wealthy farmer by the amount of property he had.
