BJS22> I came at 9:30 to check the server and there were about 6 people - waiting

BJS22> Only a couple made it back

[owoodson] Hello 84568

[VickyAL124] hi 84

[owoodson] I started to check about a quarter to none, then decided not to.

[owoodson] that should be nine.

[84568] Hi Ouida!

[84568] What is the topic for this evening?

[owoodson] Any topic you choose.

[84568] Let's talk about the courthouse in Camden. Are there any early death - records there?

[owoodson] No, only the probate records.

[VickyAL124] MORGAN,MANESS,SIMMS ,HICKS

[84568] Where can one find early death records before 1908

[VickyAL124] hum for those i think ya have to hold breath an stand on head an - pray in most cases

[owoodson] Only by searching the probate records in the county of residence.

[84568] What exactly do the probate records tell you?

[owoodson] It was late--1920s or 30s when AL started keeping death records. - There are a few mortality schedules on microfilm you might try.

BJS22> i have microfilm of a death register 1908-1915

[owoodson] The wills and probate minutes tell you when an estate was brought - to the probate court for settling and who brought it.

BJS22> very detailed. I found an infant uncle that died early that no one - knew about

[84568] How would I access the microfilm? If you are poor and have no - property, then you would not have anything in probate. Correct? Hi Vicky!

[owoodson] There is that death register, I had forgotten it.

[VickyAL124] hi 84568

BJS22> Is the original in the CH or at ADAH?

[VickyAL124] MORGAN ,MANESS,SIMMS ,HICKS

[owoodson] It was at the courthouse, but I haven't looked for it in a long - time.

[84568] Thank you.

BJS22> 84, the microfilm can be ordered at any LDS FHC

[84568] I will call them right away.

[VickyAL124] what names are you searchin 84

[84568] Gaston Grace Handley Hayes---BJ and Ouida have been very helpful to - me when I was really stuck!

[VickyAL124] dont reconize those

[VickyAL124] my trouble is i live in tuscaloosa co AL so dont get to wilcox - co AL that often

BJS22> 84, do the names Bennett, Glover or Kelly pop up in your research?

BJS22> or Dansby?

[84568] BJ, not so far on the first three. I grew up in Birmingham and went - to school with a girl named Helen Dansby.

[owoodson] Did you learn anything about the Graces from the Allenton Graces - there now?

BJS22> Refresh my memory, what area of the county are you researching

[84568] We are exchanging emails right now. My Ned Grace is older than any of - their relatives so far. I am not sure if they are related to Ned. They did - know of a Jacob Grace but all of the descendants that they knew are dead. I - think that Jacob is related to me.

[VickyAL124] me - pinehill,lowerpeachtree,lamison,camden

[84568] BJ, it turns out that the Graces are in Allenton. But my grandparents - lived in Midway, Prairie, Catherine, Alberta, Camden

[owoodson] Did Katie have any information for you?

[84568] Yes. She called her brother who gave me the information about Ned - and Jacob.

[84568] I have just given them all of the information that I have about the - Graces. They are reviewing that information to see if there is a connection.

[owoodson] Good, perhaps y'all can make the connection.

BJS22> 84, if those hayes were from upper Wilcox you might want to contact - Clara Daniel, claragen@aol.com . She has some info on Hayes.

BJS22> And my ggM was buried on the Hayes Place in Boiling Spring. I believe - it was the same as the Kekkey place on HWY 28

BJS22> Kekkey=Kelley

[84568] Thank you, BJ. I will contact her. I didn't know about the Hayes - place in Boiling Spring. Why was your ggM buried there?

[84568] Who lives on the Hayes property now?

BJS22> Dunno. I think it part of the land owned by the Strothers family. - Ouida, you know the area.

[owoodson] 84, Did you learn anything about the Prairie Mission School from - Mrs. McCall?

[owoodson] I am slightly familiar with the land around Boilings Springs. I - know the Strothers own a large acreage there, so it very well could be.

[84568] I spoke to her this morning. My gM spoke of a Dr. Stratmon who was - affiliated with Selma University. Mrs. McCall knew Dr. Stratmon. She is - checking her sources to see if she can find information on my gM who taught - at the school.

[84568] I'm eternally grateful for that lead, Ouida.

[owoodson] Glad I could help point you in her direction.

[84568] Who are the Strothers?

BJS22> I also need to talk to J McCall but haven't had the chance. All my - family attended Prairie and my aunt taught there.

>> VickyAL124 has left channel #XC.2115614

[84568] Do you know of any other schools in the area? >> VickyAL124 has joined channel #XC.2115614

[owoodson] The Strother family is an old Wilcox family and are connected to a - number of the pioneer families of the county.

[84568] Do you have to contact them before snooping around the cemeteries on - their property?

BJS22> Millers Ferry was the upper school for kids who went to Prairie

[VickyAL124] would be nice gesture but by law i believe they have to let you - see em

[VickyAL124] millers ferry went there many times as child while grampa worked - the docks

BJS22> There is a cemetery on the "Hates Place" one was the original Kelley - cemetry and the other is still used by Blacks.

[84568] BJ, is that the one in Boiling Springs?

BJS22> They're both up in the woods, hard to find. And the Kelleys were all - moved to a cemetery in McKinley in the 1980s so I'm sure that ones - totallyovergrown.

BJS22> Yes, off Hwy 28

[84568] How do you find these places?

[VickyAL124] bye all catch ya next time

[84568] bye vicky

[owoodson] Bye Vicky

BJS22> The Kelley were a pioneer family and Mt Wizard a Jones-Kelly - researcher has written extensively about them

[84568] Oh, so they are very receptive to inquiries such as these.

BJS22> The Black cemetery was shown to me about 2 years ago. You really need - a guide to get to it.

[84568] Scratch that one for me!

[84568] The Graces told me that there was a cemetery behind her house. I - hope that it won't be too difficult to get to. I am not the outdoors type - anymore.

[84568] What do you know about the Tait plantation?

[owoodson] Which Tait plantation?

[84568] I'm not sure. According to the family history of Joshua Betts Grace, - he came to Wilcox from Burnt Corn and worked on the Tait plantation. This was - before he got his own place in allenton.

[84568] I didn't realize there was more than one.

[owoodson] That would have to be the James Asbury Tait plantation--or at - least one of his.

[owoodson] What year did he come from Conecuh to Wilcox?

[84568] One moment. I'll check.

[84568] 1816

>> Hisakosan has joined channel #XC.2115614

[84568] Actually, that was when he came to Burnt Corn from Georgia with his - parents. It states in his family history that he came to Wilcox after the - Indians were cleared out.

[Hisakosan] Type HERE Hi, this is my first time to chat. I am trying to - identify my gggrandfather william Roberson//Robinson among all the other - William Robersons. I research Lee, Solomon, Sills, and others.

BJS22> hi hisakosan

[owoodson] That would be James Asbury and probably the original place in or - near Black's Bluff where Tait's home Dry Fork is located. Tait came from GA - to Wilcox about that same time.

>> Hisakosan has left channel #XC.2115614

[84568] Where is Black's Bluff in relation to Allenton?

[84568] Are there still Taits in the area?

>> Hisakosan has joined channel #XC.2115614

BJS22> hisak, what are of th ecounty are yur robersons from?

[owoodson] He must have come here in the 1820s or so then. A good - distance--Allenton is 24 miles east of Camden and Dry Fork is a good 12 - miles south of Camden.

>> Hisakosan has left channel #XC.2115614

[owoodson] Yes there are Tait descendants here.

>> Hisakosan has joined channel #XC.2115614

[Hisakosan] Type HERE Is anyone chatting? Would like to learn how to talk - with you.

>> VickyAL124 has left channel #XC.2115614

[owoodson] Just type in your comment or question and we will respond.

[owoodson] At least I will attempt--I am still learning also.

[Hisakosan] VickyAl, where is your message? Hisakosan

[owoodson] Vicky has left us.

[Hisakosan] I would like to talk with anyone who is researching the Sills, - Buffington, Roberson, Lee families.

[owoodson] Are you families from east Wilcox--old Snow Hill-Furman area?

BJS22> Have you been in touch with freda Noble? She's a Roberson researcher - but I don't know where hers are from.

[owoodson] I did research on a Buffington family from Lowndes County several - years ago. I think maybe they were connected to the Lavenders in some way. - Haven't thought about it in a while.

>> 84568 has left channel #XC.2115614

[owoodson] B.J. and I are still here.

[owoodson] Hisakosan, did you see my question?

BJS22> I think the chat server is hanging a little. I have a fast DSL - connection and it seems slow to me.

BJS22> Can you see us Hisak?

BJS22> Hmmm, something must be wrong Ouida

[owoodson] Yes, I agree something must be wrong. When do we go again--week - after next?

BJS22> Yes, you see I had to send out 3 announcements. The mail list is still - screwy.

BJS22> How about Thurs nite again

BJS22> and can we go an hour earlier -- 9:30 ET?

[owoodson] I noticed that you did send three. Thurs. will be fine and yes to - the time also.

BJS22> OK, which 3/15 or 3/22?

[owoodson] Lets try for the 22 and see how it goes. If we get many on we can - go back to every week.

BJS22> Sounds good. I really enjoyed tonight. glad you're back.

[owoodson] Thanks, glad to be back. I enjoyed it also.

BJS22> Nite now.

[owoodson] Good night.

BJS22> Nite Hisakason
