Wilcox County Chat Log - Aug 17, 2000

The topic is: Wilcox County

[owoodson] Wonder if anyone else will join us.

[nkayeal] maybe so

[owoodson] I am a Woods descendant, but mine are from Bibb Co.

[owoodson] Hello, BJ

BJS> Hi all

[nkayeal] I am a Wood decendant, but I really have no clue where they are - originally from

BJS> Trying to set up log so excuse me for a sec

[nkayeal] Hi BJ

[nkayeal] My 2great grandmother was a Wood and is buried in Lowndes Co., but - right on the Wilcox co. line

BJS> OK

[nkayeal] welcome back

[owoodson] BJ, have you checked on the plat book again?

BJS> No. Have you?

[owoodson] No, I haven't.

BJS> I'm out of town but do you want me to ask?

[nkayeal] BJ, are you familiar with any CHANCE'S in Wilcox co. the would probably mostly been over close to - the Lowndes CO. line, some were in Wilcox, Dallas and Lowndes counties

[owoodson] Not in particular, I just haven't done so again, but it might help if we both ask about the same - time.

BJS> No, offhand not familiar with the Chance name.

[owoodson] Wasn't there a Nathan Chance in the Farmersville area

[owoodson] I may have the name wrong, but I know that I have read the name and seen somethings about the - Chances.

[nkayeal] yes, he was my 3rd great grandfather. I am trying to find out who his siblings were

[owoodson] Did other members of his family come to thatr area. I am thinking that I remember he was one of - the pioneers of that area.

[nkayeal] yes, i think he was, but i really don't know alot about him, can you tell me more?

[owoodson] Not really, I remember the name and his location and I would have to think a while to see if I - remember anything else. It seems like I have something in some file, but not sure what or where.

BJS> I just sent out a message to join us inthe chat right now. Maybe we'll get a few more people.

[nkayeal] he and several of his cildren are buried at Cedar Creek Cemetery, which is right on the wilcox co - line

BJS> Hello langham

[nkayeal] hi

[owoodson] hello

[langham] Hi all, what time does it start

[nkayeal] 8

[langham] this is it?

BJS> So far. It's always hard to pick a good time for 4 time zones.

[nkayeal] hopefully more will come soon

[langham] looking for Langham and Bruce in Wilcox County about 1850 to 1880

[langham] also have Rev. James Thompson and his family. Most of them are buried at Old Society Hill

[owoodson] I am familiar with Rev. Thompson.

[langham] Really, tell me

[owoodson] He was the builder of the first Wilcox courthouse at Barboursville.

[langham] I have not heard that please tell more

[owoodson] Also built several of the other early buildings in Barbourville or Camden. And he was involved in - the establishment of the Methodist Church in Camden

[langham] I knew he was a Methodist minister but not the other

[langham] He was my ggg grandfather

[owoodson] I found the documents concerning the building of the first courthouse 1833-34.

[langham] I had heard he had some money don't know how but had two homes one in Wilcox and one in Dallas - County

[langham] where do I find these documents

[owoodson] I am wrong I did not find the documents for the building, but the Commision minutes give him as the - builder and payment of $1495.00 was approved as payment to him by the County Commission. This was from the - County Commission minutes.

>> ileman has joined channel #XC.2115614

BJS> Hey, ileman

[nkayeal] hi ileman

[ileman] hello

BJS> Small "crowd" tonite but just jump right in.

[owoodson] This courthouse was a two story frame building with two columns in front.

[langham] My great aunt said once she was in Wilcox County about 1950 or so and said she found the house, of - course couldn't say where it was

[owoodson] I am not sure which house would have been his.

[langham] said he had a lot of land

[langham] I was told that Rev. Thompson had sons that was a dentist and lawyer in Camden

[langham] His daughter Anne Catherine Thompson married Charlie Langham

[owoodson] I think he did own a rather large acreage. There was a Benjamin Thompson who was a dentist and a - Joseph Thompson who was a lawyer.

[langham] That would be them

[owoodson] Benjamin Thompson's home still stands in Camden. It has been changed architectually, but is still - here.

[langham] Is there a picture on-line of it? That would be the brother of my gg grandmother

[owoodson] I found an advertisement for his dental practice which gave the location of this home and office - and then have a post card of the Masonic Lodge which shows the house in the background before it was changed.

[owoodson] I am not sure if it is one of those on line.

[langham] how would I get a copy that?

[nkayeal] goodnight all, owoodson, if one day you find your info on Nathan would you let me know?

[owoodson] A copy of what?

[langham] the location of his home to be able to find a picture

[owoodson] Yes, if I know your email address to let you know.

[langham] Cmcne83604@AOL.com

[nkayeal] williamson@alaweb.com

[owoodson] I can send you a transcribed copy of the dentist office ad.

[nkayeal] bj, thanks for the opportunity to chat

BJS> niters

>> nkayeal has left channel #XC.2115614

[langham] I would much appreciate that. I went to Camden many years ago and but had no luck.

[owoodson] I will send it.

>> ileman has left channel #XC.2115614

[langham] I had heard he was very wealthy until after the war and lost it all. he does not even have a stone - on his grave

[langham] His wife and children have large stones

BJS> Any suggestions for the next chat? A theme?

[owoodson] I don't remember the date of his death now.

[langham] He died before the war but someone didn't seem to find the need to put a stone on his grave

[langham] His sons didn't keep up the farm for their stepmother I guess

[owoodson] After the War nobody had the money to put many stones. Also it was hard to get them here.

[owoodson] What seems to be the items most people are interested in knowing about Wilcox, BJ?

[langham] He had a son that he called "unfortunate" so not sure if he was mentally disabled or what

BJS> Get a lot of Civil War questions, of course.

BJS> Foks also want to know where so and so went between 1860-1870.

[langham] Charles langham was said to have joined the Civil war from Wilcox but found no record on him

[owoodson] You mentioned a theme for the chats, if we could figure out what kinds of things people are most - interested in records, buildings, happenings, then the chats could center around such topics.

[langham] I think this is great. This is the first time I realized there was a chat

BJS> We could start with land records or early settlers.

BJS> Most newbies don't know what to ask, so they ask about everything. We could help them focus.

[owoodson] Yes the migration times are interesting to people. Early settlers would be interesting.

BJS> langham, the first few chats had about 15 people. Very active. This is slow tonite.

BJS> Do you want to try that next time?

[owoodson] Were your Langhams from east wilcox?

[langham] I wish I had known about the others. May not have been in town, but will come back again

[langham] Camden I believe

[langham] Buried at Old Society Hill.

[langham] My Charles Langham left and went to E. Carroll Parish, LA

[langham] about 1872

[langham] My Dantzler line left Noxubee county, MS and ended up in e. Carroll Parish too

[owoodson] That is fine with me. I have been considering volunteering to host or what ever you call it. I - don't want to seem pushy and I am certainly no expert, but I do enjoy sharing what I know.

BJS> That would be great!

[langham] y'all do a great joy

[langham] yob

[owoodson] There were Langhams in the Pine Apple area later, I think.

[langham] job, my typing is not so good

BJS> You know more about the county as a whole than anyone.

[langham] Yes that was his brother

[langham] John Lowery Langham

BJS> Is Thrs a good night for you?

[langham] and Amanda Langham Colemant

[owoodson] Yes Thursday is really the best.

>> Clifford has joined channel #XC.2115614

>> Lee has joined channel #XC.2115614

BJS> We could try it but remember that's 5pm out west.

[Lee] Oh I'm so mad. I forgot the chat

[owoodson] Really the time is not a problem for me--what ever is best for the most people-or I can be here for - longer.
