NOTE: The chat started about 10 minutes before I opened the log at 9:10 pm EDT - bjs

The topic is: Wilcox County

[nkayeal] Well several lines, but particularly the WOOD'S & CH

[LSCurry] I'm searching EVANS, SCOTT, RATCLIFFE, and MANDEVILLE in Wilcox - before about 1850

[owoodson] Yes clc

[owoodson] Yes clc

[nkayeal] CHANCE families they lived in Wilcox, Lowndes & Dallas counties

[Clifford] owoodson, did not think that the jenkins & Mclean had to appear - in court.

[clc] About a year ago I went researching at the Monroe County Courthouse

[Clifford] clc, how is the information at the monroe Courthouse?

[clc] All the marriage records were laminated

>> omstar99 has joined channel #XC.2115614

[clc] After a short period of time I went to the Wilcox County Courthouse

[Clifford] bjs, where you able to put those webpages on the wilcox Co., - webpage?

[clc] The pages are shortly getting torn and weathered

[LSCurry] what are the cemetery resources for Wilcox? Looking for old family - cemeteries

[clc] Why can't a group of people get together and perserve our Wilcox - county heritage and preserve the pages here the same way???!!

BJS> Clifford, not yet but will update this weekend

[Clifford] clc, I am trying to locate my Richard "Dick" Futch parents who - maybe in monroe Co., Alabama

[JEMANUEL] Good suggestion clc

[owoodson] There are listings of many of them in the Library and a good many - are online, LSCurry

[Clifford] bjs, just asking. I really enjoy the information that you have - placed on line.

[clc] Would be willing to contribute my time and get a machine and blank - pages to do this task

[LSCurry] Ouida, are there people at the library that can do research, make - copies, etc

[owoodson] About the marriage records in the courthouse, the county has had - some of the books rebound. hopefully they will do more.

[owoodson] There is really no one at the Library to do research. We just - don't have the staff.

>> waf6718 has joined channel #XC.2115614

[GIGI] The marriage records at Wilcox County Court house are in good - condition

[Clifford] owoodson, do you know if anymore jones or Jenkins, McLean - information in those files that you sent me?

[LSCurry] Are there death records for the 1840s? I need to find if there is - a church affiliation for my EVANSes, and if there are records for those - churches.

[Clifford] waf6718, hi who are you researching?

[clc] GIGI Did you look at the actual records or the listing in the - library??

[omstar99] Type HERE Is the Camden library open on Sat. and if so do you - know the hours?

[GIGI] Actual records

[owoodson] The church records in Wilcox are very scant. Just a few scattered - here and there. There aren't any death records for the 1840s.

[clc] The last time I looked, they needed attention to preserve them

[owoodson] No the library is not open on Sat.

[waf6718] Type HEREHi Thank for noticing me. 1st time here. Searching - Moorer surname

[LSCurry] The church records...would some be in the library, or with the - individual denominations?

[owoodson] Some of the books are in bad shape. One especially. I hope the - county will fix it next.

[clc] Lamination would be the answer to preserve what is left

[owoodson] There are probably a few church records people have donated in - file folders. Which denomination?

[LSCurry] Excuse me, NOT lamination, encapsulation, in mylar

[clc] Ouida, if we wait for the county to fix, then we'll wait til the "cows - come home"

[nkayeal] waf6718... DO any of the MOORER'S that you research tie into - either GOODWIN'S or CHANCE families by chance?

[owoodson] I know, but they have fixed a few and they tell me more will be - done.

[LSCurry] encapsulation, after de-acidification. Is there a state archives - that will handle the documents?

[clc] encapsulation, lamination, whatever it takes to preserve

[owoodson] The Archives is involved in the project to microfilm the loose - probate records and the records from the top floor of the old jail. Nothing - more that I know of.

[clc] for a price i'm sure but who can foot this type of preservation?

[ileman] bbl

[waf6718] Nk pls bear with me. 1st time for this novice in this type of - forum.

>> ileman has left channel #XC.2115614

[LSCurry] encapsulation is reversible, doesn't alter the documents, - lamination does.

[owoodson] The county government should take care of the records.

[nkayeal] no problem, only my 2nd time

[Clifford] clc, your right about the county waiting & waiting for ever. I - wished that our library in Pensacola, FL would do something before we loose - information.

[clc] I'm saying anthing for a short cure not letting them rot

[waf6718] Most of my MOORER's are from Lowndes, Farmersville, Hickory Hill - Pct and Fort Deposit

[LSCurry] I don't know about other states, but htere seems to be a war - between the state archives and individual counties in KY

[LSCurry] Unfortunately the wonderful material sometimes falls betweent he - cracks

[waf6718] but I know many more are /were from Wilcox county

[Clifford] Why does not the LDS micro film the records?

[clc] Monroe County had them laminated, and granted it is not a long time - cure but for many years will protect the originals til someone can either - microfilm them or "encapsulate" them

[owoodson] The LDS has microfilmed a lot of our records.

[nkayeal] Farmersville, is where I think most of my decendants are going to - be from, but alot of business went through Wilcox county, because it is - right on the line so though they all lived near each other some lived in - one county and some in another.

[owoodson] Lamination prevents any other preservation the way I understand - it?

[clc] Ouida, can you retrieve what they microfilmed without paying a fee??

[LSCurry] nkayeal, where is Farmerville?

[Clifford] clc, not that I know of.

[owoodson] YOu mean the LDS, I really don't know. I doubt it though.

[nkayeal] Does the name Mary Jerusha Chance sound familar?

[waf6718] nk.I just invested in the HeritageQuest CD's 1870-1920 for Ala I am in 7th heaven

[nkayeal] Farmersville is actually in Lowndes CO. right on the Wilcox county line

[nkayeal] what all information does it have?

[owoodson] The Historical Society here had the deed records microfilmed by them several years ago. We paid - for the service and got one roll of film for each they did. These are stored in one of the bank vaults.

[Clifford] clc, I have order several film that has helped me.

[waf6718] Within walking distance in some cases

[omstar99] You may order film from the LDS through your nearest LDS History Center for a very reasonable - fee. This is to be view at the center.

[LSCurry] I need a good Alabama history source. Have lots of lines that came through Alabama, but don't have - a grasp of its development. Any suggestions?

[JEMANUEL] clc I don't know about other places, but the fee is very nominal in Mobile

[clc] All, My point is this --the records of all individuals at the Wilcox County Courthouse is the original - records and there seems to be a need to preserve these records for our future generations at no cost to them - and still in one piece!!

[Clifford] clc, the LDS charges $3.25 plus 0.25 for shipping for a film and maybe 0.25 for copies

[waf6718] nk: It's is the actual census records on CD.

[Clifford] LsCurry, which lines are you researching?

[nkayeal] oh, you are kidding. All counties or is it just particular counties?

[LSCurry] EVANS, RATCLIFFE, SCOTT, MANDEVILLE

[owoodson] LSCurry check the website Bibliofind.com for older books on history of AL. There is an old - fourthgrade history book that is great. I have two copies one that was my fathers in school and one that I - bought from a used book store.

[clc] clifford that's what i figured-- still a cost involved--Wilcox County should have charged them for - being able to retrieve the info if they were to charge something for it!!

[LSCurry] Ouida, what is the name of the old text?

[waf6718] nk aLL Counties . For the whole US

[nkayeal] sounds like something I would truly love!!!! >> one_girl has joined channel #XC.2115614

[Clifford] one_girl, hi who are you researching?

[owoodson] History of Alabama by William Garrott Brown. There is also the History of Alabama by Pickett that - is good.

[owoodson] It is going to be Dec.

[Clifford] lsCurry, maybe out in December

[LSCurry] great Christmas present for me

[owoodson] It should be a good book, for all that I hear of it.

[waf6718] Hi BJ. Getting very close to Dr. John Wesley Moorer.

[LSCurry] Can it be ordered now? I'm really poor in Dec.

>> GIGI has left channel #XC.2115614

[owoodson] Yes, it can be ordered now.

[LSCurry] I'll check the list for an address.

[owoodson] I checked last week for someone and it is Heritage Book, PO Box - 308, Camden, AL 36726

[LSCurry] Thanks

[Clifford] owoodson, have you found anymore information on Rebecca JOnes?

[owoodson] No, I haven't Clifford

[Clifford] owoodson, do you have anymore on bethel joseph jones line?

[clc] Ouida , Since I'll stop ranting about preserving the heritage of the - Wilcox County Courthouse records, do you have anything on the Tarvers of - Wilcox County around 1850-1860/

[LSCurry] Night folks. Gotta go.

>> LSCurry has left channel #XC.2115614

[owoodson] I have the narrative that I wrote about the family.

[nkayeal] Does anyone have any information on the family of Obediah WOOD?

[owoodson] Tarver sounds familiar, but I will ahve to think about it.

[clc] Ouida, would love to have that information--Is it in one of you books?

[owoodson] Which information , on the Bethel Jones, if so, it is not in a - book at this time.

[JEMANUEL] Enjoyed listening - see you soon.

[owoodson] Obediah Wood, which part of the county was he in?

>> Ethelsue has joined channel #XC.2115614

[Clifford] owoodson, did you get some information from ruby griffin on his - family?

[nkayeal] not really sure

>> JEMANUEL has left channel #XC.2115614

[nkayeal] probably close to the Lowndes county line

[owoodson] I talked with Ruby, but mostly researched the records in Monroe - and Wilcox.

[BooMack] TyGoodevening everyone!

BJS> Hi Wade, this is really a Wilcox County chat but ask anyway. Someone may - know.

[Clifford] wade who are you researching?

[owoodson] He is in there as the organizer of the Wilcox Rangers and as Col.

[clc] Ouida, thanks will be getting with you later!

[wade] I don't mean to intrude, but I haven't caught anyone on the Dallas - county. I'm looking for info on Ellisor's in Dallas County 1832- 1850, - Orrivlle area.

[clc] Wade, go ahead and ask about Dallas County as most from Wilcox came on - down to Wilcox County anyway

[Clifford] Ethelsue, who are you researching?

[Ethelsue] Annie Eliza Rice.

[Ethelsue] Samuel Andrew Morgan family. Also looking for any info on Condi - Dewitt Martin

[clc] What years??

[owoodson] I know there was a Rice family in Wilcox early on, but I am not - familiar with Annie Eliza. The Criswells were also here fairly early.

[Ethelsue] Annie Eliza Rice b.1849 in Wilcox Co. as far as I know. Married - Samuel Morgan 1866.

[owoodson] Right (Wright) Rice was the name of one of the men in the Rice - family

[Ethelsue] can't seem to find them in census. Any suggestions?

[Ethelsue] Condie Dewitt Martin probably born 1880--1900.

[clc] How about the 1870 Census?

[Ethelsue] Haven't had access to it as yet. Is it online anywhere?

[owoodson] In 1860 William A. Criswell was a voter in Bethel Beat, which was - in the Pine Hill area.

[Ethelsue] I need to know who her parents are. She was married before 1870.

[clc] No, not that I'm aware of except for people like BJ who has taken her - precious time to also expand into 1870

[Ethelsue] Pine hill area is perfect.

[clc] There are some Criswell's buried in the Independance cemetery as - listed on the Wilcox County site

>> wade has left channel #XC.2115614

[Clifford] ethelsue, is the morgan line from wilcox Co., Alabama & did they - move to texas?

[Ethelsue] anything about Condi Dewitt Martin ring any bells.

[Ethelsue] Morgans were from Wilcox county, but they stayed in Wilcox - County. He and she died there and are buried in Kelly Cemetery.

[clc] Kelly cemetery is in Clarke County??

[owoodson] Have you found anything on the 1850 census?

[Ethelsue] I have looked, but have not found anything as of yet.

[Clifford] I believe that I know about them. See I am also doing MOrgan - researching in Wilcox Co., Alabama which tie into my Jones from Butler Co., - Alabama

[clc] Ethelsue--You have looked in Kelly Cemetery??

[Ethelsue] Samuel Andrew Morgan was son of William Morgan and Susan Morgan
