[0378] hello

[owoodson] Hello,

BJS3> Hi Ouida. Tried about 15 names before I could get in. Kept asking for a - password.

[0378] I can't stay on long tonight.....I also couldn't get on for a while

[owoodson] I didn't have any trouble tonight--I did last week.

[0378] same password problem

[owoodson] I didn't have any mention of a password

[owoodson] Our weate

[0378] I got a message that they would email me with an alert...???

BJS3> The owner of this chat client XOOM merged with NBC so that may the - problem. Knwn as NBCi now.

[owoodson] Our weather is bad so I may loose power.

BJS3> Same here, T-storms.

[0378] it's fine here

BJS3> I'm going to just hang in the background as usual and keep the log so - "talk" to you later.

[owoodson] All right.

[owoodson] It must be a quiet night.

[0378] Ouida, I have really no clues on how to find out more about my great - grandfather's parents... Henry Tyler, James Tyler and Redden Tyler all lived - in Wilcox COunty at the time of the Civil War. But they were orphans - according to family stories. James, the oldest went off to fight and was - killed and supposedly Henry and Redden were raised by two old spinister - around Sunny South. I believe that Amos Tyler who married Anna Sheffield - were their parents But Amos is born about 181

[owoodson] What Company was James in?

[0378] let me look, I'll be back in a minute

[0378] I'd have to dig in my box, but my computer records show he dies in - 1863 in Seven Pines, tennesee

[owoodson] I found him, he was in the Wilcox Farmers

[owoodson] Redden was also in that co.

[0378] Redden lived to marry Ruth Sheffield 11/22/1876

[owoodson] There are a bunch of Sheffields in the Wilcox Farmers too

>> ShelWinn has joined channel #XC.2115614

[0378] I have it as Co. B, 38th Alabama

[owoodson] Hello ShelWinn

[0378] hello

[ShelWinn] Evening Had trouble getting on would not use my name from last - week

[owoodson] The Wilcox Farmers was the local name of the co. at the time of - organization

[owoodson] Everybody seems to have had that trouble but me for some reason

[owoodson] The FArmers were organized on April 7, 1862 at Bethel with W. Rip - Welsh as Capt. They mustered in as Co B 38th AL

>> ShelWinn has left channel #XC.2115614

>> ShelWinn has joined channel #XC.2115614

[0378] Yes, his muster papers are signed by Wm. R. Welsh

[ShelWinn] I'll try again - got thrown off net.

[ShelWinn] Researching BLOXOM, LEE POWELL

[0378] David Dumas suggested that AMos Tyler and Anna Sheffield might be - these boys parents... He found a record for Amos fighting in the Seminole - Indian Wars 1836-1841 in Water's Co. of Chisolm's ALabama Volunteers

[0378] If you mean in Camden, Isearched there once about 10 years ago and - found nothing... Daddy told me before he died that two spinister ladies took - in Henry and Redden and promised James to take care of them while he was away - at war.

[owoodson] There should be some documents on them if they were underage and - their father was dead,

[owoodson] Hello MurielM653

[0378] After he died I don't know what happened except that Henry marries - Rebecca Brewer by July 30, 1868

[MurielM653] Type HEREHi,

[0378] I did look pretty hard and found nothing.

[owoodson] I wonder if it could have been in Clarke Co.

[MurielM653] My first time in chat (this one too )

[owoodson] Welcome, what families are you researching?

[0378] well welcome

[ShelWinn] Are there any probate or will records for 1863?

[owoodson] Yes, quite a few.

[MurielM653] mine are Richey/Richie/(etc) and Farr from Dallas Co primarily

[ShelWinn] Is there somewhere to get name checked?

[MurielM653] have enjoyed reading the transcripts from the previous chats and - thought I'd pop in for a few

[0378] Ouida, would the area around Sunny South have been Clarke County?

[owoodson] There are index books in the Probate Office. BJ has put some - indexes on the webpage or sent out to the list. Not sure about the 1860s.

[owoodson] Clark County is just a few miles from Clarke Co.

[owoodson] I meant to say Sunny South is just a few miles from Clarke.

[0378] Yes, I know but it seems like everyone there definitely thinks of - Wilcox COunty as their county... at some time in History could the county - lines have been different?

[owoodson] A number of families in the Lower Peach Tree-Sunny South area had - family members who lived in Clarke.

[owoodson] Not after the very early years-the area from Clarke that became - Wilcox was not changed after 1819 I do not think.

[0378] Hmm.... I'll try looking there... it certainly is a place I haven't - looked before. Would I have to Grove Hill for the info?

[owoodson] Yes, Grove Hill is the county seat.

[0378] Thanks, for the guess.... I'll put that on my list the next time I'm - down there

[0378] I need to sign off tonight early.... hope to talk again soon.

[0378] good night all

[owoodson] Good night

[owoodson] MurielM653, you know there were Richies and Farrs in Wilcox also.

[ShelWinn] Ouida, did the names I send do any good? (Brazil)

[owoodson] I didn't recognize any other Wilcox names on the list.

[MurielM653] no i didn't know that. very interesting. will have to check - that out

[owoodson] There was a Richie family at Allenton and a Farr, Benjamin, I - think, in the McWilliams area

[ShelWinn] Would have been interesting if there was. To see other stories - from same area.

[MurielM653] i don't have many names as of yet. this has been a tough one to - do.

[MurielM653] had no names, even grandparents until about 3 years ago

[ShelWinn] BJ, did you have any list of probate from 1863?

[MurielM653] i have found the name as Rich/Richie/Richey and Ritchey

[MurielM653] thanks. will check those out

[MurielM653] just got some of the digital cds today so will do some searching

[ShelWinn] Is TWP 10 and 11 the Pine Apple area? Check the County site but - could not get to them.

[owoodson] ShelWinn, which family do you need probate 1863 for?

[ShelWinn] Bloxom (any spelling) Washington

[owoodson] Township 10Range 11 is the Pine Apple area

[ShelWinn] Hoped that was the case. Found BLM records for Township 10 and - 11.

[ShelWinn] Was there any particular reason Wilcox Co. men would have gone to - MS to enlist in Civil War?

[owoodson] Which Lee family are you researching?

[owoodson] No, I don't think so--unless the local co. was sent there and - someone decided to join that group, which was already in MS

[ShelWinn] Martin LEE son of Joel. There were also in Lowndes Co. AL

[ShelWinn] Two of the Bloxom sons enlisted in MS from Wilcox Co.

[owoodson] Is this any relation to the Martin Batte Lee who married an - Albritton woman?

[owoodson] What regiment were they in-MS or AL

[ShelWinn] Don't know on the LEE. MS Infantry and Cavalry.

[owoodson] What date did they join-early or late?

[ShelWinn] Don't know - didn't receive that info.

>> MurielM653 has left channel #XC.2115614

[ShelWinn] I have tried the find out more but no luck yet.

[owoodson] There was a Leslie Bloxom in the Wilcox True Blues, I see.

[ShelWinn] He would be another brother.

[owoodson] Have you gotten their records from Washington?

[ShelWinn] No - haven't done that yet. I get into doing this again in the - winter.

[owoodson] They might tell you some interesting things about their service, - etc.

[ShelWinn] Would there be anything if they did not sign to receive pardon.

[ShelWinn] Don't know if they did or not but left for Brazil in May 1966

[owoodson] Yes, there will be a copy of every record concerning their - service. I have seen some that even have personal letters with the records.

[ShelWinn] I have only gotten prarole papers on Confederates.

[owoodson] Some records are only a document or two, but others can be a dozen - or more.

[ShelWinn] Guess I had better put that on my list.

[owoodson] We purchased for our Library the microfilm that covers the - regiments Wilcox Companies were in.

[ShelWinn] And mine had to go to MS. Just my luck.

[owoodson] If you know the regiment you could get the film through one of the - Family History Centers I would think.

[ShelWinn] That's possible. We have a good branch here in town.

[owoodson] We purchased our film from the LDS records center in Salt Lake.

[ShelWinn] I'll check the website and see if they have it on film.

[owoodson] They are really fascinating records.

[ShelWinn] I have my great-grandfather's (Union) and his pension record - - there was a lot of information.

[owoodson] BJ, looks like we have had a slow night.

BJS3> I wonder if it has anything to do whith difficulty logging on

[owoodson] It could have, but I had an easier time tonight, than last week

[owoodson] It took me two or three tries last week.

BJS3> Sorry I didn't do that IRC trial this week.

BJS3> Maybe this week.

[owoodson] I can surely understand why you didn't have a chance.

BJS3> Should we call it a night?

[owoodson] I am going to have company this next week, but can probably work - it in with no problem. It seems like no one else is going to come on-so - maybe so.

BJS3> OK, we'll just do the trial when its convenient for us both. Thanks for - these great chats Ouida.

[owoodson] You are welcome --I really enjoy doing it.

[owoodson] Hello, BooMAck

[BooMack] Good evening everyone!

BJS3> Hi Boo! We were just about to jump ship.

BJS3> Hahahaha.

[BooMack] Okay I hope to catch everyone next Thursday!

BJS3> It's up to yuo Ouida. I don't want to make that decision.

[owoodson] It doesn't matter, I can stay till 10.

BJS3> OK, folks log's still ipen.

BJS3> ipen=open

[BooMack] Thanks for staying! Ouida, what is Grampion Hills?

[owoodson] The Grampion Hills is the area south or Camden toward Monroe - County. It is the name of the ridge of hills--some of the highest points in - the county.

[owoodson] south of Camden

[owoodson] They were named by the first settlers in that area for their - native hills or mountains in Scotland.

[BooMack] Also, I did an inter-library loan and got the book, "From Cabins to - Mansions" from Birmingham.

[owoodson] Good, glad you got it.

[BooMack] I also read your books, Within the Bend, books 1-4. Are your books - for sell any where?

[owoodson] I have them available for sale.

[BooMack] How do I obtain them?

[owoodson] By ordering them from me.

[BooMack] Do I need to email you and get that information?

[owoodson] Yes, that would be fine. owoodson@frontiernet.net

[BooMack] Thanks, I will do.

[owoodson] Thank you for your interest.

[BooMack] You are welcome. Besides, Mrs. O. Martin do you know if any - descendants of John McArthur or Peter McArthur resides in Wilcox County?

[owoodson] The Hines are descendants of John McArthur and Mrs. Will Jones is - a Peter McArthur descendant.

[owoodson] I can't think of any others now.

[BooMack] Thanks. I am still researching information on John McArthur who - supposedly owned my ancestors.

>> BJS3 has joined channel #XC.2115614

[owoodson] Peter settled in the Black's Bluff area. One of his daughters - married a Horn, John, I think. His grandson was Peter McArthur Horn, who I - have researched quite a bit.

[BooMack] Is Black Bluff a town in Wilcox County?

[owoodson] No, its another area of the county--Black's Bluff was the area in - a bend in the river--and today is known as Coy more or less the same area - that is.

[BooMack] I know it's just about ten Ouida, but I have one more question. - What type of business(es) was John and Peter involved in?

[owoodson] JOhn was a blacksmith and later he had a sawmill and millwork - factory in partnership with William Thomas Mathews. Actually this could be - two John McArthurs. He also had a plantation and farmed the land. Peter was a - planter or at least a large farmer.

[owoodson] I know the very early probate records show John receiving payment - for blacksmith and carriage repair work, etc. The sawmill and factory were - in business in the 1850s-early 60s. The Yankee soldiers burned the sawmill - in 1865.

[BooMack] Was this the John McArthur that you referred to in one of your - books regarding the story of "The Day the Yankees Came" and a sawmill was - burned. The only other John McArthur that I saw listed in Wilcox county was - John D. McArthur, I think that was his son.

[owoodson] Yes, I am pretty sure that it was. I think John D. was his - son--pretty sure about it.

[BooMack] Ouida, thanks for the information. I am going to logoff. - Goodnight BJ.

[owoodson] Good night.

BJS3> nite

BJS3> Ouida, good nite

[owoodson] BJ, see you next week.

[owoodson] Good night
