[owoodson] Wonder what happened to Langham1

BJS3> Scared him off! Ouida, I'm going to finish some work. I'm here though. - Excuse me.

[owoodson] All right

BJS3> ileman just wrote couldn't log in.

[owoodson] wonder if more are having that trouble

BJS3> Seems like you're the only one who hasn't had a problem :-)

[owoodson] wonder why.

BJS3> Uoida, what kind of tax records are there? What info do they contain?

>> Eagle6832 has joined channel #XC.2115614

BJS3> Hi Eagle

[owoodson] The early tax records for the most part are in Montgomery. There - is one ad volorem book from the 1870s I think in the Probate office.

[owoodson] Hello Eagle

[owoodson] Later tax records are there in the little room where the elevator - to the Library is located.

BJS3> What kind of info would I find?

[owoodson] Names, amount of land and amount of taxes and in what location - generally

BJS3> Were they collected annually so person had to file annually?

[owoodson] Yes

[owoodson] A lot of those books and records were carried to the Archives.

BJS3> What are they called? Tax Books or something else?

[owoodson] I have found some from the 1880s and 90s in the books stored in - the room. Tax record books

[owoodson] The early records are the ones in Montgomery

BJS3> Eagle, what are your names?

BJS3> This board is awfully slow tonight.

[owoodson] Yes, maybe Monday is not a good night

BJS3> Eagle are you there?

[owoodson] Wonder what happened to Clifford

>> Eagle6832 has left channel #XC.2115614

BJS3> My goodness, every time I open my mouth I chase someone out of the - room!

[owoodson] Either that or they are having a problem responding--what do you - think?

[owoodson] Hello mikok

BJS3> Don't know.

BJS3> Hi.

[mikok] Hi, just observing

[owoodson] welcome

[owoodson] We are quiet tonight, however.

BJS3> In addition to the tax records what are some of the lesser known - records available either at courthouse or ADAH?

[mikok] I ususlly miss the chat...it is too early for me here in Wash State

[owoodson] The County Court records and the records of the County Commission - are two kinds that I find are interesting. Lots of genealogical materials in - them.

[owoodson] This is one reason we went later tonight, mikok

BJS3> Is the county court different from the probate court, orphans court, - etc?

[owoodson] Yes, county court was criminal charges or other legal proceedings - early on. Probate Judge was the presiding officer. The Chancery court dealt - with other matters,

[owoodson] In the 1820s and 1830s there are lots of interesting cases - involving all kinds of things.

BJS3> Are those books in Camden or Montgomery?

[owoodson] The Circuit court records dealing with law suits, divorces, etc.

>> langham1 has joined channel #XC.2115614

[owoodson] Some are in Montgomery and a few were left in Camden. The loose - records are the ones that have been retrieved from the old jail and will be - microfilmed.

[mikok] (mikok) is anyone researching the Dumas family of Wilcox Co. .

[owoodson] The earliest County Court books from the 1820s are in Montgomery. - I have used the books on two or three times.

[owoodson] Not anyone who has been in the chat room that I know of. I know a - Dumas descendant here in Camden.

[owoodson] I once did a little research on the Dumas family. I was - researching the Spiva family and if I remember correctly Unity Spiva was - connected to the Dumas family.

[mikok] I will try find out who that Dumas is in Camden, was looking across - the river around Pine Hill...also interested in Abe Cook near Camden

[owoodson] Louise Harvell is the Dumas descendant I mentioned. Abe Cook who - lived at Cook Hill or the one who lives at Clifton today?

[mikok] Cook descendant of Abe Cook who had a "plantation" that I visited in - 1940.

[owoodson] Yes, Cook Hill is not far from our house across the creek from - Possum Bend.

[mikok] Is there a descendant of Abe in the area?

[owoodson] Daniel Cook and Alice Sellers Cook were the first of that family - in Wilcox. Do you mean the Mr. Abe Cook who was living when you visited in - 1940 or an earlier one?

[mikok] 1940

[owoodson] His daughter-in-law lives at Cook Hill. Her husband was Huestis - Cook and their children both live away from Camden. Others in the family - still own property here and visit, but I think Miss Virginia is the only - family member here.

[mikok] I can't remember Abe's wife's name, can you tell me?

[owoodson] Yes, she was Lallie Bragg Cook.

[owoodson] Do you have a copy of THE BOOK OF COOKS?

BJS3> FOUR more people wrote and said they couldn't log in!

[owoodson] Did you suggest that they change their login name?

BJS3> Yes, Hope they're monitoring their mail.

[owoodson] Perhaps it would be a good idea to send a notice to the whole list - that everyone should change their name and try to log before the start of the - next chat? what do you think?

BJS3> Think so. Except you though LOL.

BJS3> mikok did you have prblems?

[owoodson] No, see I had to first--about three weeks ago. I tried for a half - dozen times and just decided that I was putting the name in wrong-tried - owoodson and it took it and I have had no more trouble.

[owoodson] The next week, didn't you have to change yours?

BJS3> I had problems and had to add a 3 to the end of my username to get mack - in. I'm sure it has something to do with the change to NBCi.

[owoodson] Probably so.

>> mikok has left channel #XC.2115614

BJS3> Left for a minute and come back to see we're alone again.

[owoodson] Yes.

BJS3> I will send out instructions Ouida. Hate to have people turned off - cause its too much trouble.

[owoodson] I know

BJS3> What day/time do you want to try mext.

[owoodson] I am sure it is frustrating to try to get on and not.

[owoodson] What about going back to next Thursday-maybe at 9 again

BJS3> That's this Thur 10/12?

[owoodson] No, I meant next week

BJS3> Oh, OK. Let's do that.

[owoodson] All right. Maybe this will give everybody a chance to get the - login problems straight.

BJS3> It's almost 11:30 here. Guess we should call it a night.

[owoodson] Yes, it looks like no one else is coming.

BJS3> Nite

[owoodson] Good night.
